Sanctuaire Notre-Dame de la Salette

The second most popular pilgrimage site in France after Lourdes, this basilica is a jewel of religious architecture in Isère.

On the edge of the Écrins National Park, this magnificent site peaks at an altitude of 1800 meters.

The panorama is exceptional, offering a view of the Dévoluy massif dominated by the Grande Tête de l'Obiou. Below, we discover the Sautet lake with its turquoise blue waters as well as the Pellafol plateau.

Origin of the sanctuary: On September 19, 1846, two local children, Maximin Giraud (11 years old) and Mélanie Calvat (14 years old), reported having met a “beautiful lady” in the mountain pastures where they were grazing their cows, above the village from La Salette-Fallavaux.

The Sanctuary is thus erected around this place of Marian apparition in 1846.

Today: The church built at this time has been elevated to the rank of basilica and is served by religious people called missionaries of Notre-Dame de la Salette. Many pilgrims from all over the world visit this shrine, which has grown considerably since then. A hotel-restaurant, a shop and a bookstore complete the offer to better welcome visitors to this exceptional place.

How to access it? Accessible all year round by car to the gates of the Sanctuary, it is also possible, in the summer season, to arrive there on foot via several marked paths from Corps, Valgaudemar or Valbonnais. These different routes allow you to discover the surroundings of the Sanctuary, rich in alpine flora and fauna, and to enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.
